What's an Art major?
Are you creative? Do you like to express yourself through a visual medium? Do you enjoy hands-on learning? Then a major in art is for you.
The Art Department offers a variety of majors and minors in the art field including art history, studio art, graphic design, and photography/film/digital media.
While pursuing a degree in art, you can take a variety of courses in the following fields:
- Art history - from pre-history to modern art
- Design techniques
- Painting - including watercolor, oil, acrylic, dye on silk, mixed media
- Drawing - including pencil, ink, pastel, calligraphy, perspective
- Ceramics - including hand-building, wheel, sculpture, glazing techniques
- Illustration and publication design - including layout and production techniques
- Web design - including multimedia applications and animation
- Photography - including basic to advanced courses in photojournalism and lighting
- Film production - including short films, documentaries, video shooting, editing
Each major and minor program offered by the Art Department assures that you will have a strong knowledge base and the technical skills to enter either graduate school or the job market.
Declaring a MajorStudents who wish to declare a major at Gallaudet University use the "Major Selection/Change Form," available from Academic Advising (in the Jordan Student Academic Center, Room 2220) or from the Registrar (in Chapel Hall, Room 101). Students need to get signatures of their advisors and the department chair. Some departments have specific requirements for students to be majors.
Requirements for Admission to a Major or Minor in the Department of Art
The Department of Art requires only the signature of the department chair.
